The goal of the WWAMI program is to make public medical education accessible to residents throughout the five states, and to encourage graduates to choose careers in primary care and family medicine, and practice in non-metropolitan areas of the northwestern U.S., often lacking adequate numbers of primary care physicians and access to healthcare.

WWAMI is the UW School of Medicine’s one-of-a-kind, multi-state medical education program. The acronym, WWAMI, stands for the states served by the UW School of Medicine: Washington, Wyoming, Alaska, Montana and Idaho.

With a focus on primary and rural health care, the Alaska WWAMI provides flexibility as you pursue your career goals with advanced patient care training, electives and other experiences that help you transition into residency training.

Our applicants must all either be verified residents of a WWAMI state or meet our Out-of-Region criteria. Applicants from each of the WWAMI (Washington, Wyoming, Alaska, Montana and Idaho) states will be considered for admission into their state’s cohort.

WWAMI Regional Medical Education. In the early 1970s, the University of Washington took on a bold challenge to train and prepare physicians to care for patients and communities throughout the WAMI states, Washington, Alaska, Montana and Idaho (Wyoming joined in 1996).
