Here are 16 unbelievable foods that kept the troops and those on the home front fueled during World War II.

Here are some examples of recipes that would have been used between 1939 and 1945. Heat the dripping and add the bacon rinds. Then add the rabbit joints and cook steadily for about 10 minutes or until golden brown in colour. Rub the fat into the dry ingredients and mix to a soft consistency with syrup and milk or water.

The government rationed food in World War Two to ensure people got an equal amount of food each week. In 1939 Britain only grew enough food to feed one person in every three and with Nazi U-boats threatening to starve the country into defeat, the government had to take action to prevent a food shortage.

The government published recipes to convince people that they could still cook good food during the war. As you can see from the following selection of World War Two recipes published by the government, ingredients were used inventively and sparingly.
