Gefreiter was the only enlisted rank within the Royal Prussian Army and the imperial army of the German Empire until 1918, to which an exceptional enlisted soldier could be promoted on the recommendation of the Hauptmann (Captain) or Rittmeister (Cavalry-Master), and ultimately endorsed by the Regiments-Commandeur (Regimental Colonel).

Mainly, the period during World War I when Hitler served as a Gefreiter (lance corporal [A 1]) in the Bavarian Army, and the era of World War II when he served as the Supreme Commander-in-Chief of the Wehrmacht (German Armed Forces) through his position as Führer of Nazi Germany.

2021年6月4日 · As far as I know in WW I Fussartillerie was the only branch that used the rank Obergefreiter. The Gefreiter button had a diameter of 25 mm. Obergefreiter and Serganten wore a larger button with 29 mm diameter. Here´s a scan of an 1910 Gunner´s handbook/manual. What you have looks like a legit Prussian Gefreiter button.

2012年11月13日 · On the site firstworldwar.com under "Who's Who" it states he rose to the rank of Lance Corporal but no further. wiki.answers.com states his rank was Gefreiter, the equivalent to Lance Corporal in the British Army. However, on the site Adolf Hitler and World War 1: 1913-1919 it states he was promoted to the rank of Corporal.
