Vostok 5 (Russian: Восток-5, lit. 'Orient 5' or 'East 5') was a joint mission of the Soviet space program together with Vostok 6; as with the previous pair of Vostok 3 and Vostok 4 the two Vostok spacecraft came close to one another in orbit and established a radio link.

Vostok 5, the fifth spacecraft in the USSRs manned flight series, was piloted by cosmonaut Valeriy F. Bykovskiy. The spacecraft consisted of a nearly spherical cabin covered with ablative material. There were three small portholes and external radio antennas.

The State Commission convened from 11:30 to 13:00, where it was reported that Vostok-5 would naturally reenter the Earth's atmosphere after just 7.1 days. To prevent uncontrolled reentry, it was decided to shorten the mission to 5-6 days, while keeping Vostok-6 in orbit for three days instead of one, given Tereshkova's seemingly successful flight.

Vostok-5 finally lifted off at 14:59, at the very end of its launch window, and successfully reached orbit. As the third stage separated with a bang, leaving the spacecraft weightless, Bykovsky saw snowflakes flying behind the window.
