Vithkuq, known in Albania as being a traditionally Christian settlement is neighbours with various Muslim and Christian Albanian villages that surround it, although the latter have become "demographically depressed", due to migration. [11]

Though the alphabet is sometimes erroneously claimed to be named after its inventor, as in Carl Faulmann's Das Buch der Schrift, the script's name is derived from Vithkuq, a village in the Korçë region where Veqilharxhi was born.

Vithkuq is a municipality in the district of Korçë, in the southeast of Albania. Its remoteness from large towns makes it a real haven of peace where you can fully disconnect and immerse yourself in the relaxed times of rural Albania.

Around 1856, Vithkuqi recovered and emerged as a village with 150 houses and the three neighborhoods of today. Today, Vithkuq is a tourist village where people go to visit beautiful churches and enjoy unspoilt nature. The first of the churches in this originally Illyrian settlement was built in 1162 and there are a total of 18 churches in the village and its surroundings.
