Vayeshev, Vayeishev, or Vayesheb (וַיֵּשֶׁב ‎— Hebrew for "and he lived," the first word of the parashah) is the ninth weekly Torah portion (פָּרָשָׁה ‎, parashah) in the annual Jewish cycle of Torah reading. The parashah constitutes Genesis 37:1–40:23.

The name of the Parshah, "Vayeshev," means "And he dwelt" and it is found in Genesis 37:1. Jacob settles in Hebron with his twelve sons. His favorite is seventeen-year-old Joseph, whose brothers are jealous of the preferential treatment he receives from his father, such as a precious many-colored coat that Jacob makes for Joseph.

Parashat Vayeshev introduced us to one of the most famous women in the Bible. The complex character of Joseph raises questions about what it means to be righteous. Joseph's experience in prison teaches him, and us, that we succeed and flourish when we support those around us. No one ever told Jacob that his son Joseph was still alive.
