On 17th September 1974 the Vanden Plas 1500, based on the Austin Allegro, was introduced as a replacement for the Princess 1300. Powered by BL's 'E' series 1485cc overhead camshaft engine fitted with a single SU HS6 carburettor producing 68bhp at 5500rpm, purchasers had the option of a 5-speed manual gearbox or 4-speed AP automatic.

The Princess is a badge engineered variant of the Austin A99 Westminster, manufactured by BMC from 1959 to 1968 and marketed under the Vanden Plas marque. The model was launched in October 1959 under the name Princess 3-litre. [1] .

The Vanden Plas models were rebranded as the 1.5 and the 1.7, [7] the 1.5 having a twin carburettor 1500 cc engine and a manual gearbox, while the 1.7 had a single carburettor 1750cc engine and an automatic gearbox.

In 1960, the Princess became the Vanden Plas Princess. Austin was joined in BMC by Jaguar with its new subsidiary Daimler. Production of Princess limousines ended in 1968 when they were replaced with Daimler DS420 limousines (Jaguar had acquired Daimler in 1960) built by Vanden Plas on a lengthened Jaguar Mark X platform.
