The Vainakh tower architecture (Chechen: Вайнахи бӀаьвнийн архитектура; Ingush: Вайнахи Гlала архитектур/Вайнахи вовнийн архитектур), also called Nakh architecture, is a characteristic feature of ancient and medieval architecture of Chechnya and Ingushetia. The oldest fortifications in the North Caucasus date from the 3rd millennium BC.

Vainakh towers (Ingush: гӀалгӀай гӀалаш/вӀовнаш, romanized: ghalghai ghālash/vhóvnash) [a] are medieval Ingush stone structures used as residences, signal posts, and fortifications. Most are found in the Sunzhensky and Dzheyrakhsky Districts of Ingushetia, North Caucasia.

A characteristic feature of Vainakh architecture in the Middle Ages, rarely seen outside Chechnya and Ingushetia, was the Vainakh tower. This was a kind of multi-floor structure that was used for dwelling or defense (or both). Nakh tower architecture and construction techniques reached their peak from the 15th to 17th centuries. [61]

Two kinds of towers were built: 3-4 storey residential towers had an area of 6×6 metres, with stone walls and wooden joists. Animals were kept on the lowest floor (or sometimes two floors) while the floor above was for the family living quarters and the fireplace and the top floor was a storage area and guest accommodation.

Vainakh or Nakh towers are a distinctive feature of the defensive architecture in Chechnya and Ingushetia (two republics in Russia). Their construction increased in the 12th and the 13th centuries while the 15th and the 17th centuries were the peak point of this style.

The area is known for its stone architecture: funerary crypts, Pagan and Christian shrines and temples, and Vainakh towers. These towers were used as dwellings, others had a military purpose; some combined both functions.
