Unther began as a benevolent nation, but after millennia of governing the land, Gilgeam became corrupted with power and in doing so, he also corrupted the nobility. Consequently, for most of its history, Unther was seen as the most miserable of the tyrannies in Faerûn.

In Unther, the Dark Scaly Ones have proclaimed the day of the first full moon after Midsummer a holy day dedicated to the Queen of Chaos. Known as the Festival of Vengeance, this day marks the defeat of Gilgeam by Tiamat, Nemesis of the Gods.

Gilgeam, the God-king of Unther, was a demigod and the former leader of the Untheric pantheon. He was known for his jealousy, cruelty and pride.[8] A former intermediate deity, he was reduced to the state of demigod after the Time of Troubles due to his centuries-long abuse of his followers.

Gilgeam became more and more despotic over time and grew to be hated by the people of Unther. When the last of Tiamat's cultists summoned an aspect of her, she began to forment plans to overthrow the God-king and she regained her status as a god with the resulting swell of worshipers who shared her goal.

In Unther, after a few centuries, Enlil (also known as Anu) abdicated in favor of his son, Gilgeam, and vanished from the Realms. Ishtar gave the power of her manifestation soon after to Isis and vanished as well.

Left with less than a third of the territory it held a year ago, Unther is on the brink of ceasing to exist. Only the mercy of Mulhorand's pharaoh or powerful intervention by outside agents (such as the Red Wizards, the Zhentarim, or the church of Tiamat) is likely to save Unther from becoming a territory of the new empire of Mulhorand.
