Unionida is a monophyletic order of freshwater mussels, aquatic bivalve molluscs. [1][2][3] The order includes most of the larger freshwater mussels, including the freshwater pearl mussels. The most common families are the Unionidae and the Margaritiferidae.

2017年1月1日 · This study presents the most comprehensive phylogeny to date of the larger Unionida family, i.e., the Unionidae. The phylogeny is based on a combined dataset of 1032 bp (COI + 28S) of 70 species in 46 genera, with 7 of this genera being sequenced for the first time.

We present a revised list of freshwater mussels (order Unionida, families Margaritiferidae and Unionidae) of the United States and Canada, incorporating changes in nomenclature and systematic taxonomy since publication of the most recent checklist in 1998.

Freshwater unionid mussels (Unionida) are important ecosystem engineers, and one of the most globally imperilled taxa, yet evidence concerning their endosymbiotic fauna remains patchy. Further, endosymbionts are not considered in an IUCN assessment for any unionid mussel.

Union­ids are found in var­i­ous per­ma­nent fresh­wa­ter sources such as lakes, streams, and rivers. The fam­ily Union­idae is not found in high moun­tain lakes, prob­a­bly due to a lack of proper fish hosts for the glochidia or poor nu­tri­ent sup­ply (Smith 2001).
