I think the difference is that Google and Facebook are advertising companies that openly fund their free products with your data, whereas Avast is an antivirus product that's ostensibly meant to protect your data but was actually collecting and selling it by default and was only disclosing part of what it was doing if you actually looked into it.

Ran into the same problem as you, except I had boot issues and had a data drive also fail at the same time I was uninstalling Avast without said software. It's likely a coincidence, but I'm not a big believer in coincidences. :) Good to hear you got the cure.

We tried multiple things to silently uninstall and nothing worked, I assume because of the tamper protection. Even manually uninstalling sometimes doesn't work, we've had to use the standalone Avast Clear tool on most of them. For just 25, I would manually do it.

The free versions don’t include all of the protections. Even the free one has a setting to turn off notifications and ads. Finally, if you don’t know how to configure an antivirus, hire someone who does.
