The "uncanny valley" refers to a phenomenon on a graph of how humans react emotionally to the appearance of a robot. Robots can be given a wide variety of appearances ranging from flat metal boxes and obviously mechanical appendages, to more human-like appearances with faces and familiar body layouts.
