Valley Forge (CG-50) was laid down by Ingalls Shipbuilding, Pascagoula, Mississippi 14 April 1983; launched 23 June 1984; and commissioned 18 January 1986. In April 1987, Valley Forge made her initial deployment to the Western Pacific and Indian Ocean. This was the first time an Aegis cruiser deployed with a Pacific Fleet Battle Group.
