In June 1987, USAFSOS, as an organizational element of the 23rd Air Force, was assigned to the US Special Operations Command (USSOCOM), headquartered at MacDill AFB, FL. In May 1990, the school became a direct reporting unit of the newly established Air Force Special Operations Command (AFSOC).

Today, the Squadron Officer School in-residence program is an immersive educational experience for US Air Force and US Space Force active duty, guard, and reserve captains, civilians, and international officers.
