U-matic or 3⁄4-inch Type E Helical Scan[1][2] or SMPTE E[3] is an analogue recording videocassette format first shown by Sony in prototype in October 1969, and introduced to the market in September 1971.

U-matic is an analog videotape format introduced by Sony in 1971, originally designed for professional television production and educational use. The tape features a ¾-inch (19mm) width and was the first large-scale commercial product to utilize a cassette-based videotape system.

Designed in the late sixties/early seventies the U-matic format was the fore-runner to all home video formats. It is based on a revolutionary U-wrap tape lacing system which specifies a video drum diameter of 11cm giving a tape writing speed of 8.54 meters per second.

U-Matic is an analogue recording videocassette format first shown by Sony in prototype in October 1969 and introduced to the market in September 1971. It was among the first video formats to contain the videotape inside a cassette, as opposed to the various reel-to-reel or open-reel formats of the time.
