What is a Tulku? The word Tulku (རྩོད་ལུགས།) in Tibetan can be translated as “emanation body” or “reincarnated lama.” A Tulku is a spiritual leader or teacher believed to be the direct reincarnation of a previously accomplished being — often a high lama, scholar, or master.

Tulku is the Tibetan translation of the original Sanskrit term nirmanakaya. The term Tulku has been translated as "the manifested-body, created-body, manifestation,” or also as "incarnation, reincarnation, or rebirth." It has been translated into Chinese as huofo, which means “living buddha,” and into Mongolian has qubilyan.
