Tupuaʻi (French: Tubuai) is the main island of the Austral Island group, located 640 km (400 mi) south of Tahiti. In addition to Tubuai, the group of islands include Rimatara, Rurutu, Raivavae, Rapa and the uninhabited Îles Maria. They are part of the Austral Islands in the far southwest of French Polynesia in the south Pacific Ocean.

Situated to the south of Tahiti, in the Austral Islands, the cooler climate and rich soil of Tubuai are perfect for the growing of lychees. This deliciously sweet, succulent fruit is exported to islands throughout French Polynesia in december each year.

Tubuai is known as the breadbasket of The Islands of Tahiti. But don’t go looking for wheatfields, because the crops of Tubuai are fruit and vegetables. Carottes, lychees, potatoes…almost anything grows!

You can’t get bored in Tubuai. A picnic excursion on motu Toena, deep-sea fishing, whale watching (from July to November), kitesurfing and scuba diving.

The largest of the Austral Islands, Tubuai is also the administrative center of the island group. Tubuai’s lagoon stretches over 33 sq. mi. (85 km²), offering a vast water playground protected by a barrier reef and pristine motu islets.

Tubuai is located 640 km south of Tahiti. With its 2,049 inhabitants (last 1996 census) spread on 45 km2, it is the most crowded of the Australs Islands and the administrative and economical center of the archipelago.
