Trogons have soft, often colourful, feathers with distinctive male and female plumage. They are the only type of animal with a heterodactyl toe arrangement. They nest in holes dug into trees or termite nests, laying 2–4 white or pastel-coloured eggs. The position of the trogons within the class Aves has been a long-standing mystery. [4] .

Striking male has bronzy-green head and breast and bright red belly; female grayish-brown with limited red belly and distinctive white squiggle behind eye. Compare with Mountain Trogon, which overlaps extensively in range.

Like other trogons, elegant trogons display sexual dimorphism, where males and females have different plumages. Males are often brightly colored. They have red-orange lower chest and belly and metallic deep green back. They get their old name from the copper shade on their backsides.

The Elegant Trogon, formerly known as the coppery-tailed trogon, is a medium-sized bird with a length of 28–30 centimeters and a weight of 60–78 grams. Exhibiting sexual dimorphism, males are resplendent with a metallic deep green back and a red-orange undercarriage, while females and immature males are more subdued in coloration.

A brightly-colored bird of dense evergreen forests, usually seen perched quietly on a mid-story perch. Males have a white tail, while females are grey with a black and white tail. The orange race male is similar to the Green-backed Trogon also present but rare in the Atlantic rainforest, but yellow eye ring seems to be a sure way to identify, as is more orange colored breast. Female has a different tail pattern.

Like all trogons, the mountain trogon is sexually dimorphic. The male is metallic green on the crown, nape, upperparts and chest, the latter separated from its bright red belly and vent by a narrow band of white.
