Topoxte (/tɒpɒʃtˈɛ/) (or Topoxté in Spanish orthography) is a pre-Columbian Maya archaeological site in the Petén Basin in northern Guatemala with a long occupational history dating as far back as the Middle Preclassic. [2] As the capital of the Kowoj Maya, it was the largest of the few Postclassic Mesoamerican sites in the area.

A nice two hours away from the beaten path. Normally a fraction of Peten visitors venture to Yaxha and only a fraction of this fraction will further explore Topoxte. The ruins are small but the journey to the small islet is much fun thanks to a small boat which will take you across the Yaxhan lake. Make sure to come back at Yaxha before sunset!
