Example: Last time I read it, was in a thread about the game Star Citizen, after a rant of someone telling everybody how great the game will be in the end, in an answer post only stating "The cake is a lie.", meaning the promise might be there, but it could be a false one and blindly believing might be a mistake.

There's a hidden area in one of the levels where you can discover graffiti on a dirty wall (the rest of the game so far has been sterile and white) that says, among other things, "the cake is a lie." I won't spoil the ending for you, but the phrase got popular because of how dramatic it was at first, and how silly it is when you explain it.

2021年9月5日 · Nothing was warped. The cake that was promised by Glados is a lie. It doesn't mean that there isn't cakes in Portal universe. Just that there isn't cake that you will get once you finish the tasks. That cake doesn't exist. That cake is a lie. There might be other cakes but cake that Glados gives you doesn't exist. But if the cake is a lie, then maybe being rich is a deceptive facade, and the people with cake/money actually aren’t any happier than those without cake/money. I would have been waaaaay off.

The cake is a lie. I want it for the pleasure. If it's not actually going to give me more pleasure (and, scientifically, it is not), then it's so much easier to go do something else until my brain has finally forgotten what it was trying to get me to do.
