TeX (/ tɛx /, see below), stylized within the system as TeX, is a typesetting program which was designed and written by computer scientist and Stanford University professor Donald Knuth [2] and first released in 1978.

Check out the MiKTeX or TeX Live distributions; they contain a complete TeX system with LaTeX itself and editors to write documents. These are free distributions, i.e., there are no charges for download or use.

TeX Live is intended to be a straightforward way to get up and running with the TeX document production system. It provides a comprehensive TeX system with binaries for most flavors of Unix, including GNU/Linux and macOS, and also Windows.
