The Great Seal of Tennessee is the official government emblem of the U.S. state of Tennessee.

Even before Tennessee achieved statehood, efforts were made by local governmental organizations to procure official seals. Reliable historians have assumed that as early as 1772 the Articles of the Agreement of the Watauga Association authorized the use of a seal.

Seal. The Roman numerals XVI signify that Tennessee was the 16th state to enter the Union. The plow, the sheaf of wheat and a cotton stalk symbolize the importance of agriculture, while the riverboat attests to the importance of river traffic to commerce. This was adopted as the official state seal in 1987.

Tennessee's current state seal, adopted in 1987, is a modernized version of the seal originally designed in 1801. The seal features the words "Agriculture" and "Commerce" and the date of the state's founding.

There shall be a seal of this state, which shall be kept by the governor, and used by him officially, and shall be called “The Great Seal of the State of Tennessee.” In spite of the provision of the Constitution of 1796, apparently no action was taken until September 25, 1801.

Surrounding all these images are the words "The Great Seal of the State of Tennessee", and "Feb. 6th, 1796", the date of the state's Constitution. As it happened, however, the design of the seal changed over time, officially and unofficially.
