Taautus of Byblos, according to the Phoenician writer Sanchuniathon, was the son of Misor and the inventor of writing, who was bequeathed the land of Egypt by Cronus. Sanchuniathon's writings, through the translation of Philo , were transmitted to us by Eusebius in his work Praeparatio evangelica .

From Misor descended Taautus, who invented the writing of the first letters: him the Egyptians called Thoor, the Alexandrians Thoyth, and the Greeks Hermes. But from Sydyc descended the Dioscuri, or Cabiri, or Corybantes, or Samothraces: these (he says) first built a ship complete.

According to Sanchoniathon, knowledge started with Taautus who was first of all under the sun to discover the use of letters and the writing of records. This god from Byblos was the Logos of the Egyptian Tehuti and the Greek Hermes. As Enoch, he gave the Hebrews their Torah and the Alexandrians their Corpus Hermeticum.

Taautos came from Byblos, Phoenicia, that shows a continuous cultural tradition to 8,000 B.C. He played his flute to the chief deity of Byblos, the moon-goddess Ba'alat Nikkal. Taautos was called Thoth by the Greeks and Djehuti by the Egyptians.
