The TRIM21–IgG interaction was first described in a yeast two-hybrid screen in a study that investigated the role of TRIM21 as an autoantigen in immune disorders such as systemic lupus erythematosus and Sjögren's syndrome, in which it is referred to as Ro52 or SS-A 40.
