The T568B standard matches the older AT&T 258A color code and has been the more widely used wiring scheme. It is also permitted by the ANSI/TIA-568.2-D standard, but it provides only single-pair backward compatibility to the USOC wiring scheme.

T568A and T568B are the termination standards used by Internet backbone infrastructure, Internet providers and all the way down to homeowners or businesses. The only real difference between these two pin-to-pair assignments are the green and orange pairs.

The standard specifies how to connect eight-conductor 100-ohm balanced twisted-pair cabling, such as Category 5 cable, to 8P8C modular connectors (often referred to as RJ45 connectors). The standard defines two alternative pinouts: T568A and T568B. ANSI/TIA-568 recommends the T568A pinout for horizontal cables.
