The T18 howitzer motor carriage, or T18 HMC, was an American self-propelled gun. Its development started in September 1941 as a close-support vehicle using the M3 Stuart 's chassis. A 75 mm howitzer was mounted on the right front of the vehicle. The gun mount was adapted from the M3 Grant.

The T-18 light tank (also called MS-1, Russian: малый сопровождения, первый, romanized: maliy soprovozhdeniya, pearviy, "Small [Vehicle for] Support, First [type/example]") was the first Soviet-designed tank. Produced from 1928 to 1931, it was based on the Renault FT, with the addition of a vertically sprung suspension. [2]

The first designs of the SPG that would later be indexed HMC T41 were formed by April of 1942. The designers attempted to tackle three of the T18's problems: cramped fighting compartment, bad ventilation, and poorly placed (nearly vertical) casemate armour. The approach to this design was fairly radical.

The first T-18 prototype was delivered and tested in mid-May 1927 before a composite commission, which included the head of the state. It still showed some deficiencies, notably on rough terrain. It proved its inability to cross 2 m (6.56 ft) wide trenches and was stuck in those beyond 1.2 m (3.94 ft) deep.
