The T-84-120 Yatagan is a prototype model intended for export, mounting a 120 mm gun able to fire NATO-standard tank ammunition and anti-tank guided missiles. After the adoption of the T-80 tank, the Soviets began improving its design.

During the military parade for the Independence Day of Ukraine on August 24, 2018, Ukrainian armed forces has presented the T-84 Yatagan MBT (Main Battle Tank), a new upgraded version of the local-made T-84 fitted with a NATO standard 120mm cannon.

Ukraine has also developed various variants and upgrades of the T-84, such as the T-84-120 "Yatagan," which features a more powerful 120mm gun, and the Oplot-M, an improved version with enhanced armor protection and modernized systems.

This MBT was designed in 2000. Its design features the technical solutions tested during modernisation of T-72-120 battle tank. In some publications the Yatagan MBT was also referred to as the KERN2-120 (name of prototype) or the T-84-120.
