They believed that they had in them to make a difference and make a positive impact on the lives of the poor and the marginalized. And so, they started the Swami Vivekananda Youth Movement (SVYM, for short), with initial assets of high ideals and all the positive benefits of inexperience.

The Swami Vivekananda Youth Movement, which began in 1984, first targeted poor patients admitted in the students’ medical school and at weekend clinics held in the rural neighbourhood. Then, in 1987, SVYM started working with Indigenous tribal communities in the students’ home region of Karnataka state.

SVYM has its headquarters in Mysuru district of Karnataka State in Southern India. Acting as a key promoter-facilitator in the community’s efforts towards self-reliance and empowerment, SVYM is developing local, innovative and cost-effective solutions to sustain community-driven progress.
