The subantarctic region comprises two geographic zones and three distinct fronts.The northernmost boundary of the subantarctic region is the rather ill-defined Subtropical Front (STF), also referred to as the Subtropical Convergence. To the south of the STF is a geographic zone, the Subantarctic Zone (SAZ).

The Subantarctic Region is defined as a maritime area encompassing coastal regions and islands characterized by mild temperatures, abundant precipitation, and diverse vegetation dominated by tundra and forests like Nothofagus sp. and Metrosideros sp.

Sub-Antarctic islands are the islands situated closer to another continental mainland or on another tectonic plate, but are biogeographically linked to the Antarctic or being parts of the Antarctic realm, roughly north of and adjacent to the Antarctic Convergence.

Located south of New Zealand in the remote Southern Ocean, the wild and beautiful Subantarctic Islands are a forgotten paradise. They are home to some of the most abundant and unique wildlife on earth, with many species of birds, plants and invertebrates found nowhere else in the world.

Southern Chile, Patagonia, and New Zealand comprise the Subantarctic region (Figure 1). It has a distinctive forest flora, of which Nothofagus (southern beech) is perhaps the most characteristic element.
