2008年5月3日 · The Shantung "panamas" have a much heavier coat of a "shellac" but I don't think it is the same as the stiffener used for felts. Remember anything you apply to the outside of a Panama ( or any other type of straw hat) will coat and close up some of the open areas in the weave and make the hat MUCH warmer to wear in the heat.

2015年6月23日 · From a recent 3 for $35 EBay win, I've been messing with a vintage Dobbs coconut palm hat. The hat was delivered with cracks in the crown and brim, which I was able to fix with Pliobond. I discarded the badly faded puggaree and restored the shape with some steam. During the steaming, I noticed that the hat became pleasantly pliable.
Straw, paper straw, can someone break this down for me?
2018年8月13日 · Thanks for the replies. I'm just a city guy. My problem is that I can't find a straw hat, I mean a real straw one, that looks good with the way I dress. They tend to look more rugged or outdoorsy (awful cliché terms but there you go). To me a broader brim always felt more Stetson to me. Please forgive me if I'm offending anyone. [emoji4]

2011年4月13日 · For the record, they don't use natural shellac any longer primarily because it has a color and can discolor the hat. These days they use a synthetic resin. While old fashioned shellac would certainly work since that's what they used in the pre-plastics era, I would suggest buying something like Kahl hat stiffener, which is one of the modern resins.
