Sterkfontein (Afrikaans for Strong Spring) is a set of limestone caves of special interest in paleoanthropology located in Gauteng province, about 40 kilometres (25 mi) northwest of Johannesburg, South Africa in the Muldersdrift area close to the town of Krugersdorp.

These were a series of dazzling fossil discoveries at the Sterkfontein Caves! The biggest of the Cradle’s Caves gave justification to the argument for Africa, as our Place of Origin. The most important fossil finds at this site are: “Mrs Ples” in 1947 and “Little Foot” in 1995.

The Sterkfontein Caves are interesting for the discoveries of human fossils over time and thus helping us to understand the concept of our evolution. However, there are no fossils preserved or kept inside the caves at present.
