Purandara Dasa was a wealthy merchant of gold, silver and other miscellaneous jewellery from Karnataka, who gave away all his material riches to become a Haridasa (literally meaning a servant of Vishnu or Krishna), a devotional singer who made the difficult Sanskrit tenets of Bhagavata Purana available to everyone in simple and melodious songs.

Sri Purandara Dasa was a renowned composer, singer, and a Haridasa philosopher from present-day Karnataka, India. A devoted follower of Madhvacharya's Dvaita philosophy, he is widely celebrated as one of the chief architects of Karnatak (Carnatic) music.

With a sense of deep concern, Sri Purandara dasa memorial trust (SPDMT) built a memorial for Sri Purandara dasa in Bangalore, perhaps the only one of its kind in the entire state, inaugurated by HH Vishwesha teertha swamiji in June 2013.

Pushya Bahula Amavasya is the puNyatithi of Sri Purandaradasa (c.1484-1564). Sri Puranadara is the luminous star of Kannada Haridasa movement and most part of his life was spent during the heydays of Vijayanagara Empire. Purandaradasa was born to Varadappa Nayaka & Leelavati couple as Srinivasa Nayaka.

Sri Purandara Dasa Memorial Trust (SPDMT) was deeply moved by the fact that a memorial did not exist for the great Saint composer Sri Purandara Dasaru who reportedly penned about 475000 kritis packing the essence of Vedas, Unpanishads and other holy scriptures into his compositions in simple Kannada.
