SP received their first GP9's for freight service (#5604-5621) beginning January of 1955. These 'Phase II' GP9's also debuted the trademark -- classic! -- SP five light package both front and rear, the passenger GP's had the large dual purpose 'Ash can' or 'beer barrel' signal light.

When the 5623 was renumbered 3005 in 1965, it was changed from DF606 to EP418-3 which meant EMD, Passenger, 4 axle, 1800 horsepower, type 3. Yes, a GP9 is 1750 horsepower but the S.P. rounded it up for the classification system.

The most recognizable was the addition of a stainless steel, "GP9" model nameplate located just forward of the battery box ahead of the cab. This cosmetic feature was first offered on the "9 Line" and available upon customer request.

It was delivered in August 1959 with serial number 25632 and frame number 5608-2. This locomotive was built as a Phase III unit with 48” fans, and painted in the “Bloody Nose” paint scheme. These were among the last GP9s built by EMD for a US customer, and the only order of low nose GP9s built for a major railroad.
