Starting in 1974, the SP and Cotton Belt GP20's were cycled through a Sacramento rebuild program to become GP20E's, although not all were rebuilt; some ending their days without being rebuilt. see the SP GP20 model info page for a detail breakdown for the variations.

SP 4082 is a GP20. Reportedly SP 4082 was built in 1962 as SP GP20 7232 SP Class DF-617, builder's number 27353. In the 1965 renumbering it became SP 4082 SP Class EF420-1.

2022年9月7日 · The EMD GP20 model was born out of the necessity by EMD to get greater horsepower out of a diesel locomotive. During the late 1950s, trains became heavier, schedules tighter, and there was a call for locomotives with more horsepower.

Shown here are PC engine #2256 and Southern Pacific Railroad engine #4068. Both were built by GM-EMD. #2256 is a radio-equipped GP-35 built in May of 1964 and rated at 2,500 horsepower. #4068 is a GP-20 built in 1962 and rated at 2,000 horsepower. They are pulling a westbound autorack train. Lots of new Chrysler products on-board!
