The AC-9 was one of two Southern Pacific Railroad's articulated steam locomotive classes that ran smokebox forward after 1920. Twelve AC-9 class locomotives were built by Lima in 1939 and were Southern Pacific's largest and heaviest steam engines, partly a consequence of low quality coal these engines were designed to burn.

The AC-9 locomotive was one of two classes of articulated locomotives that the SP ran and operated smokebox forward. Twelve engines were built by Lima in 1939. This class of engine was one of the heaviest and largest classes operated by the SP. Their wheel arrangement of 2-8-8-4 meant they were "Yellowstones" but they were rarely called that.

Southern Pacific 2-8-8-4 "Yellowstone" Locomotives in the USA
In 1939 the SP received 12 Yellowstones from Lima for use throughout the southern part of the SP system. Unlike the Cab Forwards, the class AC-9 locomotives were built as coal burners. They were later converted to burn oil. Also, the AC-9 class had a grate area of 146 sq. ft. rather than the 139 sq. ft. of their cab forward siblings.

While most of Southern Pacific's later articulated locomotives were Cab Forwards, the twelve AC-9s were of conventional design. Since there were no tunnels to pass through on the line from Tucumcari, New Mexico to El Paso, Texas, they were able to burn coal in the usual way.
