The Southern California Solitary Anemone is an animal that lives in the inter-tidal region of the California coast. We saw this Solitary Anemone (say, "uh-NEM-oh-NEE") in a tide pool near Point Loma in San Diego. The inter-tidal region is the part of the shore that is between the tides.

The starburst anemone or sunburst anemone (Anthopleura sola) is a species of sea anemone in the family Actiniidae. The sunburst anemone was formerly considered the solitary form of the common aggregating anemone, but was identified as a separate species in 2000. [1]

Anthopleura artemisia has verrucae on only the top 2/3 of its column and usually lives mostly buried in sand. Geographical Range: From Alaska to Panama, these anemones flourish in the intertidal and subtidal zones. Only found in a few places with upwelling south of central CA.

The anemone has a ring of knobs (acrorhagia) with stinging cells just under and outside the ring of tentacles . When the anemones are not fighting the acrorhagia are usually retracted and hard to see. The column is covered with vertical rows of adhesive tubercles or verrucae .
