2011年9月30日 · UTF8 repurposes the high 128 entries of the extended ASCII character set for multi-byte encodings. Take for instance ツ (the "/ character). Its UTF8 encoding is "EF BE 82". Thus, we'd expect to see three characters from the extended ASCII set (see ISO8859), though I cannot seem to identify the specific character set that would cause "ツ".

I use that ASCII trick all the time to look for data that doesn't seem to be evaluating correctly, but isn't really human readable when it comes from unknown SQL databases, websites, etc. It wasn't really all that quick though. I always forget that integers do not require quotes around them to make an array, so I struggled with that for a bit.

Because the copy-paste version is so prevalent due to the combination of obscure characters used in the emoticon, and knowledge of the intricacies of reddit's formatting system is not widespread, it's extremely common to see the shrug guy with a missing arm, thus the joke about dropping his arm.
