Shōrin-ryū is generally characterized by natural breathing, natural (narrow, high) stances, and circular, rather than direct movements. Shōrin-ryū practitioners assert that correct motion, moving quickly to evade violence with fluid movements and flexible positions are important, and that a solid structure is vital for powerful blocks and strikes.

Shorin-ryu karate is one of the major branches of karate. It was born out of the fighting forms, techniques, and traditions practiced in the Shuri and Tomari villages of Okinawa. A clear connection between this ancient form and our own style, Shobayashi Shorin Ryu, is revealed through a simple linguistic analysis. Shaolin and Shorin are actually phonetic interpretations of the characters which mean “small forest”. The Japanese pronunciation for the same characters is sho bayashi.

The main difference between the two is the Chinese system relies heavily on open hands whereas the Okinawan systems uses more closed fists. This is attributable to the incorporation of Okinawan Te which means hand or fist. Originally the Shorin system was concentrated to an area around Tomari village in Okinawan.

Our curriculum consists of kihon (basic techniques), kata (forms), bunkai (analysis), oyo (application), yakusoku kumite (pre-arranged sparring), jiyu kumite (free sparring), and goshinjutsu (self defense techniques).
