The shō (笙) is a Japanese free reed musical instrument descended from the Chinese sheng, [1] of the Tang dynasty era, which was introduced to Japan during the Nara period (AD 710 to 794), although the shō tends to be smaller in size than its contemporary sheng relatives.

There is a basic fingering rule for the shō stating that fingers assigned to more than one pitch can only play one of them at a time. For example, the A4 and D5 (written A3 and D4) cannot be played simultaneously because they are both fingered with the left hand (L.H.) ring finger.
