Tarshish in the Old Testament is the mysterious land to which the great trading vessels of the Phoenicians sailed, returning to Tyre with all kinds of strange and valuable goods. The expression “ships of Tarshish” occurs a number of times in the Old Testament and is seen to denote large oceangoing merchant vessels irrespective of destination.

According to the Jewish Encyclopedia Da'at [he], the biblical phrase "ships of Tarshish" refers not to ships from a particular location, but to a class of ships: large vessels for long-distance trade. [1] Tarshish occurs 25 times in the Masoretic text of the Hebrew Bible.

Tarshish was a sea-port and very wealthy (Psalm 72:10; Jeremiah 10:9; Ezekiel 27:12, 25; Ezekiel 38:13) as most Scriptures refer to ships carrying silver and gold whenever it is mentioned. The king had a fleet of trading ships manned by Hiram's servants.

2022年11月14日 · Some scholars have suggested that the Chronicler must have mistaken the phrase “ships of Tarshish” in 1 Kings 22:48 as indicating the destination of the ships. This critical view typically also assumes that Tarshish was located in the Mediterranean Sea, making the Chronicler doubly mistaken.
