Stian Tomt Thoresen (born 18 November 1976), [1] [2] [3] known professionally as Shagrath, is a Norwegian musician. He is the vocalist, multi-instrumentalist, and a founding member of the symphonic black metal band Dimmu Borgir and Also, founding member, rhythm guitarist and bassist of Chrome Division .

Aug 15, 2024 · The name Shagrath is taken from an orc (actually named Shagrat) in J.R.R. Tolkien's "The Lord of the Rings", in which he commands over the tower of Cirith Ungol. In 2004, Thoresen told NRK1 that "Shagrat is an orc demon (sic.) from the book "Lord of the Rings".

Shagrath, Brynjard Tristan and Stian Aarstad later joined Dimmu Borgir, and then released an EP in 1994 entitled Inn i evighetens mørke ("Into the Darkness of Eternity"). This short EP sold out within weeks, and the band followed up with the 1994 full-length album For All Tid ("For All Time").

The band's current lineup is officially a duo comprising Shagrath on lead vocals and Silenoz on rhythm guitar. They are joined by backup members Dariusz "Daray" Brzozowski on drums (since 2008), Geir "Gerlioz" Bratland on keyboards (since 2010) and Victor Brandt on bass (since 2018).
