The semicolon is intended to separate two sentences where the second sentence clarifies or extends the first. In practice, they're often used incorrectly and there is ample evidence that they confuse readers and translation software.

But you can use either a semicolon or commas. To use a "simpler" sentence: 1 *We need to show that 2 plus 2 equals 4; that is, that 4 is the sum of 2 and 2. In 1, we have two separate clauses, which we can join with a semicolon; the latter clause is clarifying, and can be removed without making the sentence ungrammatical. This is not true.

It would make my life a million times easier if there was a way to AUTOMATICALLY place a semicolon and 2 spaces after bolded words in a document. I imported a list into word and the main characters are bolden but the semicolon did not import correctly so now the bolded words are not separated from regular text. Please tell me how!!!
