To save entangled seals, we developed safe and effective sedation techniques. Throughout the world, seals are becoming entangled in fishing gear. Initial attempts to capture and untangle these wary seals on Cape Cod proved difficult, and we realized we needed a new approach.

Seal Rescue Ireland is a charity dedicated to the rescue, rehabilitation and release of sick, injured, or orphaned seals. We run a 24-Hour Rescue Line, supported by just over 600 Rescue Network Volunteers who help to assess, and transport seals to our care.

Our expert teams treat sick and injured seals, then return them to the wild – plus look after orphaned seal pups until they’re old enough to look after themselves. If a seal can’t be returned to the wild, they’re given a safe and secure home in our aquariums or sanctuaries.

Namibia has a healthy Cape Fur Seal population of more than one million individuals all along its coast. These seals are exposed to illegally abandoned fishing gear and other marine debris. Since 2013, the OCN team has rescued over 4000 entangled seals from certain death.
