African elephants live in parts of central, eastern, and southern Africa. An African elephant calf weighs about 250 pounds at birth, and will keep growing throughout its entire lifetime!

An umbrella species and ecosystem engineer, the conservation of the African elephant is of global significance. For more than a decade, conserving this iconic species has been a high priority for San Diego Zoo Wildlife Alliance.

Two juvenile male African elephants, Tsandzikle (meaning “beloved”) and Inhlonipho (meaning “courteous”) have taken up residence at the San Diego Zoo Elephant Odyssey habitat. The males, who arrived from the Reid Park Zoo in Tucson and the San Diego Zoo Safari Park earlier this week, are adjusting well to their new surroundings.

The Safari Park’s elephant habitats spread out over six acres and are divided into two main yards, providing all the elephants with opportunities for social interaction. With eight African elephants, there’s always something happening!
