Metal bonding covers over 40 percent of the structure, which is bonded with up to 4 layers. This allows optimization of skin thicknesses and provides exceptional resistance to fatigue and cracks. Although production ceased in 1999, the average Saab 340 is still only at half of its design life.

2023年1月25日 · The Saab 340 broke new ground in many ways, introducing new technologies and bringing features normally found in much larger aircraft to a small regional turboprop. Using diffusion bonding, the need for rivets was greatly reduced, saving weight and increasing the strength of the fuselage.

In 1979 SaabScania of Sweden and Fairchild in the USA reached an agreement to conduct joint feasibility and development studies on a 30 to 40 seat commuter airliner. The resulting SF340 design was launched in September 1980 with the aim of capturing 25 to 30% of its market.

On January 25th, 1983, the Saab 340 undertook its very first flight. In the following 40 years, more than 450 of the regional turboprops were built, finding homes with operators including Regional Express, Silver Airways, Loganair and Crossair.
