STS-50 not only marked the first U.S. Microgravity Laboratory flight, but also the first Extended Duration Orbiter flight. To prepare for long-term (months) microgravity research aboard Space Station Freedom, scientists and NASA need practical experience in managing progressively longer times for their experiments.
STS-50 was the first flight of the regenerable C02 removal subsystem (RCRS). The RCRS was activated shortly after orbital insertion and operated satisfactorily for the first 25 hours of the mission. The RCRS uses regenerable solid amine to adsorb C02 and water from the Orbiter cabin environment instead of non-regenerable lithium hydroxide (LiOH).
