The STS-51E mission patch design (shown here as a mock-up) was created as a one-piece patch with the tab built-in but in January 1985, a month before liftoff, Senator Garn was added to the crew, making this design obsolete. Since these patches had not yet been distributed, the Baudry tabs were cut off and replaced with a newly-made Baudry-Garn tab.
