STS-51 was a NASA Space Shuttle Discovery mission that launched the Advanced Communications Technology Satellite (ACTS) in September 1993. The flag in orbit signifies the U.S. presence in space and pre-eminence in manned spaceflight. The original flag is used to symbolize a continuity of technical achievement and progress since colonial times.

2016年5月12日 · STS-51L launched with TDRS-B at 16:38 GMT on 28 January 1986. The Shuttle disintegrated 73 seconds after launch due to an o-ring failure in one of the Solid Rocket Boosters, killing the seven astronauts aboard. Note that a dark bordered variation also exists.

The STS-51E mission patch design (shown here as a mock-up) was created as a one-piece patch with the tab built-in but in January 1985, a month before liftoff, Senator Garn was added to the crew, making this design obsolete. Since these patches had not yet been distributed, the Baudry tabs were cut off and replaced with a newly-made Baudry-Garn tab.
