The Volkswagen SP2 is a sports car that was developed by Volkswagen do Brasil and built from July 1972 until December 1975. It is based on the chassis of the Brazilian market Volkswagen Type 3.

Although it’s little-known outside of its native Brazil, the VW SP2 has become a cult classic in air-cooled car circles and they’re now highly sought after.

2022年5月28日 · The SP2 is based on the Brazilian Volkswagen 1600 Variant, with power coming from a rear-mounted 1.7 liter air-cooled flat-four capable of 65 bhp. It wasn’t a particularly fast car, but many owners have since applied modifications or even swapped in new engines in search of better performance. The Volkwagen SP2 started out as “Project X” in 1970.

Dubbed SP2—the “SP” was short for Sao Paulo—VWB’s new sporty coupe was introduced in 1973 and was largely regarded as a work of art. Volkswagen do Brasil designer Marcio Piancastelli is credited with the car’s shape, which at the time of introduction was favorably compared to expensive exotic cars.
