SOS Children’s Villages has been supporting children and young people without parental care, or at risk of losing it, in Laos since 1995.

The SOS Children's Village consists of 14 family homes, accommodation for co-workers and the necessary administrative buildings. There is an SOS Kindergarten where up to 100 children can be taken care of. An SOS Hermann Gmeiner School provides primary and secondary education to up to 470 students.

SOS Children's Villages has been working in Laos since 1993 - decades of fighting and destruction have brought the country to an economic standstill, resulting in a growing number of children and families in need of support.

SOS Children's Villages now supports children, young people and families in six locations throughout the country. At present there are six SOS Children's Villages in Laos, five SOS Youth Facilities, six SOS Kindergartens, five SOS Hermann Gmeiner-Schools, one SOS Vocational Training Centre, three SOS-Social Centres and one SOS-Medical Centre.

For years, SOS Children's Villages has been requested to extend its operation to the city of Savannakhet, second largest city and commercial hub of Laos. The city is linked to Thailand by means of a bridge over the Mekong River, which was completed at the end of 2007.
