Rupshu is a high elevation plateau and valley and an eponymous community development block in southeast Ladakh. It is between the Startsapuk Tso and Tso Moriri, and west of Mahe. The Salt Valley and the Puga Valley to its north are also part of the bigger Rupshu area. [1]

Rupshu is a high-altitude plateau in Ladakh lying south of river Indus and is the westernmost part of the larger Changthang plateau which extends far inside Tibet and is inhabited by nomadic pastoralists called the Changpas.

The Rupshu is a large area to the south east of Ladakh, on the road linking Kulu & Leh. The altitude of the valley varies between 4500m (14850ft) & 5500m (18150ft). The climate, which is extremely cold and dry, makes for little agriculture but a lot of grazing land.

The Rupshu Valley lies amidst the Zanskar and the eastern Tibetan border to bring the highest and the unexplored peaks of Ladakh. Geographically, being the most alluring part of the Changthang plains, the Rupshu valley extends towards 1000 kms east of the Tibetan ranges.

One of the several geographic regions formed as a result of this impact is the Rupshu, a dry, high-altitude plateau lying southeast of Ladakh. It forms part of the larger area of Changthang, which spreads east into Tibet for about 1,500 kilometers and whose landscape is characterized by rolling mountains, vast plains, and massive brackish lakes.

Rupshu Kharnak. A beautiful trek through a less-frequented area of Ladakh, this route follows the same trail as on the Markha trek for the first 3 days, before entering the high plateau of Changthang, which stretches far into Tibet.
